Hail Damage on a Garage Door in Southern Colorado
Southern Colorado takes hail most springs. Not every dent matters, and knowing which do will save you an argument.
Cosmetic versus structural
A dent in the flat field of a panel, away from hinges and track, is usually cosmetic and the door keeps working. A dent that reaches a hinge line, deforms a panel edge, or bows a section changes how the door folds and will start binding.
The test
Open and close the door slowly and watch it from inside. Hesitation, shuddering, or rollers loading against one side of the track at the damaged section means the geometry is affected.
Document it the same day
Photograph the whole door straight on, each damaged area close up with something for scale, and the data plate inside the top panel. Photographs taken weeks later are far less useful.
Section swap or whole door
Depends entirely on whether that panel profile and colour are still made. Long-running profiles from the major brands are often available years later; discontinued ones usually mean the whole door.
